THE INTERNET IS DEAD. THEY’VE TURNED IT INTO A NEWSPAPER.

Hacker News has developed columns. Our obituaries desk is treating the appearance of a newspaper as a technological extinction event.

What actually happened

Actual source. No editorial possession.

Hacker Times presents Hacker News stories in a newspaper-style layout, with summaries and links to original sources. It describes itself as an independent, AI-edited front page. A different way to browse the news; not the death, resurrection, or physical transformation of the internet.

MAN REPLACES YOUTUBE WITH VOICES INSIDE HACKER NEWS.

Thousands of videos recovered from comment threads. Website described as “curated”; we have alerted our cult desk.

What actually happened

Actual source. No editorial possession.

In his October 31, 2026 post, Andrej Karpathy describes HackerTube: a browsing interface for 6,454 YouTube videos recommended in Hacker News comments. It includes recommendations without user accounts and keeps state in the local browser session. The governments, cults, and threats in our headlines are invented.

YOUR DVD DRIVE HAS BEEN HIDING A LASER ALL THESE YEARS.

It sat in your home. It made that noise. And for years nobody asked what was inside. Family now questioning every disc it ever touched.

DiscImageStudio converts pictures into data that creates visible patterns on the surface of burned CDs, DVDs, and single-layer Blu-ray discs. Its documentation describes a Windows design-and-burning app and an experimental offline command-line tool for Linux and macOS. It is an optical-disc art tool, not a séance.

1996 COMPUTER RETURNS TO HUMILIATE ALL OF HUMANITY.

Beige box discovers three decades of chess research. You discover that the thing in your parents’ attic could still ruin your afternoon.

What actually happened

Actual source. No editorial possession.

Nicholas Carlini’s November 1, 2026 article describes adapting modern chess-engine improvements, including a Stockfish port, to a 200 MHz Pentium Pro with 64 MB of RAM. The experiment explores how much chess strength comes from better software rather than newer hardware. His classical-time-control Elo figure is an estimate, not a match played against Kasparov in 1996.

Hacker Books collects books mentioned in Hacker News comments and lets readers browse titles, authors, topics, and recommendation-based lists. The site’s November 2, 2026 catalogue covers mentions from 2007–2026. The worms, transformations, and disappearing authors are entirely fictional.

About this newspaper & our alleged editorial standardsThere is a serious bit. +

This is satire, not a news service. The underlying projects are real. The breathless headlines, sinister insinuations, market ticker, and classifieds are made up. They are not allegations about the people behind the linked projects.

The editorial technique: take one technically ordinary fact, remove its context, and print the misunderstanding in a sufficiently large font. Each What actually happened panel links to the original project so you can inspect reality without our assistance.

Inspired by the escalating absurdity of SMBC comic #1623, Hacker Times, and Karpathy’s HackerTube.

One static issue, dated 3 November 2026. Not a live feed. No model runs when you read it. Future editions depend entirely on whether the publisher remembers this exists.

No sign-up, no paywall, no tracking code in this file. The page sets no cookies and makes no background network requests. Source links open external sites only when clicked; the hosting provider may still keep ordinary access logs.

Independent parody. Not affiliated with Hacker News, Y Combinator, Hacker Times, SMBC, or the creators of the linked projects. The original projects deserve a visit. We have done them a tremendous disservice.
